Probiotics for dogs: what helps, what's hype, and the numbers

For a healthy dog, a daily probiotic is optional. The evidence is strongest for one specific job: getting through bouts of diarrhea faster. In the best canine trial, dogs on a probiotic resolved acute diarrhea in 3.9 days versus 6.6 days on placebo. Do probiotics work for dogs?

For specific situations, yes, with modest and well-documented effects. The two situations with controlled-trial support are acute diarrhea (shorter episodes) and digestive upset under stress like boarding, shelter stays, or diet changes. For a thriving dog with normal stools, there is no trial showing a daily probiotic adds anything measurable.

That makes the buying decision simpler than the marketing suggests: match the product to a problem, and match the strain to a study.

What is the best-proven use?

Shortening acute diarrhea. In a randomized trial of dogs with acute idiopathic diarrhea, those fed Bifidobacterium animalis AHC7 at 2×1010 CFU per day resolved in 3.9 days on average versus 6.6 days on placebo, and fewer of them ended up on metronidazole (38.5% versus 50%) [1].

Cutting nearly three days off an episode matters for the dog, the carpet, and the vet bill. But note what the trial treated: uncomplicated diarrhea in otherwise healthy adult dogs. The pattern worth noticing: the best-marketed strain result (SF68 in shelters) is actually a cat finding. Plenty of dog products cite it anyway. Strain evidence does not transfer between species any more than it transfers between strains.

Can probiotics fix bad dog breath?

Usually not, because most terrible dog breath is periodontal disease: plaque, tartar, and infected gums, which affect the majority of adult dogs and need a vet dental exam, not a supplement. If the breath is newly awful, that exam comes first.

Where probiotics have a plausible supporting role is the mildly stinky mouth in a dog with clean teeth, and gut-driven odor. Oral-microbiome products for pets are new and the published dog-specific evidence is thin, so treat them as worth trying after dental disease is ruled out, not instead of ruling it out.

Can I give my dog human probiotics?

It is rarely dangerous, but it is also not the same product. Strains are host-adapted: the documented canine results above come from strains selected for or tested in dogs, and human formulas carry neither the studied strains nor dog-appropriate dosing guidance. If you are buying something anyway, buy the one with a trial behind it.

Powder, chew, or capsule?

Form is mostly a compliance question. Powders (the FortiFlora format) mix into meals and are easiest to dose for picky eaters. Chews are the easiest sell to the dog but run warmer manufacturing processes, so quality control matters more. Capsules dose precisely if your dog tolerates them. The strain and the viable count matter more than the format.

How many CFU does a dog need?

Match the studied dose rather than chasing the biggest number: the AHC7 trial used 2×1010 (20 billion) CFU per day [1], and SF68 products dose lower.

The bigger issue is whether the label is true at all. When researchers tested 25 commercial animal probiotics, only 4 of the 15 products that made specific viable-count claims actually met or exceeded them, and just 2 of those also described their contents accurately. That is a 27% pass rate on the most basic promise a probiotic makes [3]. Favor brands that publish their quality control.

What about cats?

The shelter trial is actually the strongest single result in this category, and it belongs to cats: SF68 cut the share of cats with diarrhea lasting 2 or more days from 20.7% to 7.4% across 217 shelter cats [2]. For a cat entering a stressful stretch (boarding, a move, a new animal in the house), the evidence for a probiotic is better than it is for the average dog.
